Our story

How North Charleston Pest Control works

North Charleston recorded 114,852 people at the 2020 census. The city sits across Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties, and county lines run through it, so two neighbours can fall under different county mosquito programmes. Many of the older houses are single-storey brick or frame on vented crawl spaces under mature live-oak canopy. In a warm, humid coastal climate, humid air that enters a vented crawl space can condense on the cooler ducts and joists of an air-conditioned house. Sustained damp feeds wood-decay fungi and draws termites to the sub-floor, which is why crawl-space work is a large part of this trade. The City of North Charleston's own page gives average precipitation of about 50 inches, and the climate stays warm and humid most of the year, with no winter freeze deep enough to stop breeding.

Formosan subterranean termites are established in Charleston. Clemson's Home and Garden Information Center says they were introduced into South Carolina in the 1950s and dates their arrival in Charleston to the mid-1950s. People are the main cause of their spreading range, mostly by moving infested material such as old railway ties. Infestations are concentrated in coastal areas from Charleston south to Beaufort, and Clemson's Dr. Eric Benson has said they have been in the Charleston area for 60 years. Native subterranean termites swarm in early spring, usually in the afternoon. Formosan swarms come later, from mid-May to July, often in the evening and drawn to lights, so the time of day helps tell the two apart. The termite swarm timing guide sets out the detail.

Mosquito pressure follows the warm, wet months. Charleston County treats larvae in standing water from the air and adults by ground spraying, and it chooses where to spray using surveillance equipment and reports from the public. Asian tiger mosquitoes, the most common daytime biting mosquito in the Carolinas, breed in rain gutters, flower pots and tires rather than in natural wetlands, so mosquito control often starts with the containers on the property. Fire ants are another arrival route: South Carolina is entirely inside the federal fire ant quarantine zone, and soil, sod and nursery stock move under regulation. Phones are answered 24/7, and a visit the same day happens only when a technician is free.

Who does the work

Vented crawl spaces and humid air

The call is connected to a local, licensed, independent pest control company, and that company does the inspection and treatment work. It is not North Charleston Pest Control. The company's license or registration number is given on request, by phone at (855) 974-4733, to anyone who asks. It is not printed on this site, for privacy reasons: it is that company's private business information and is not published here.

What that means for a caller in North Charleston is simple. Ask for the license number on the call, and check it against the department's license records if you want to. Ask which company will attend. Tell the caller whether your house sits on a vented crawl space or a slab, because a great many houses here are on crawl spaces, where humid air and damp draw wood decay and termites to the sub-floor.

What we hold ourselves to

Crawl space and slab, planned apart

A vented crawl space and a slab-on-grade house need different attention. In one there is sub-floor framing to check, and in the other there is none, so the visit is planned for the construction you describe. A slab home page covers the second case.

Termite calls, sorted by swarm

Native and Formosan subterranean termites swarm at different times of day and in different seasons. Telling a caller which one you saw, and when, helps the call reach the right service. Drywood termites nest in timber with no soil contact, so they are a separate case again.

Mosquito breeding starts at home

Asian tiger mosquitoes lay in standing water in containers, so draining buckets, gutters and tarps does more than any spray can. If mosquitoes persist after you have cleared your own property, they may be breeding beyond it, and the State Department of Public Health advises contacting your local mosquito programme.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Who does the pest control work?

A local, licensed, independent pest control company does the inspection and treatment. This site is the phone line that connects you with it. The company, not this site, does the work, and the technician who attends works for that company.

Can I get the license number?

Yes. Ask for it on the phone and it is given to anyone who asks. It is not printed on this site, for privacy reasons, because it is the company's private business information.

How soon can a technician come out?

Phones are answered 24/7. A visit the same day happens only when a technician is free, and this site does not give an arrival time. Same-day service is never promised on water damage calls.

Is the price given on the phone?

The price is explained and approved before any work starts. It depends on the house, its construction, access and the scope of work, and it is confirmed on site.

When do termites swarm in North Charleston?

Native subterranean termites swarm in early spring, usually in the afternoon. Formosan subterranean termites swarm from mid-May to July, often in the evening, drawn to lights. Clemson's Home and Garden Information Center is the source for both.
