Getting a technician out
How do I get a technician to my home?
Call (855) 974-4733. Phones are answered 24/7, and the call-taker will ask for your city and ZIP first. A visit the same day happens only when a technician is free.
Can I be promised a same-day visit?
No. Same-day visits depend on a technician being free when you call, and no arrival time is given in advance. If the first opening is later, ask what else is available.
Do you cover my part of the county?
Check your ZIP on the ZIP check page. County lines run through the city, so two neighbors can fall under different county mosquito programs.
What should I have ready when I call?
Your city and ZIP, the kind of pest, where you saw it, and whether the home has a crawl space or a slab. If a sale is pending, say so, since a CL-100 may be needed.
What the work involves
What does a termite visit look at?
A technician checks the structure for subterranean termites and wood damage, starting at the sub-floor where the house has one. Drywood termites live inside timber with no soil contact, so a soil barrier does not reach them.
What is a palmetto bug?
It is an unofficial name. For some South Carolinians it means the American cockroach, and along the coast it often means the smokybrown, which is dark mahogany, shiny, and a strong flier drawn to lights. Read the palmetto bug guide.
How do I tell Formosan termites from native ones?
Native subterranean termites swarm in early spring, usually in the afternoon. Formosan swarmers come later, from mid-May to July, usually in the evening and drawn to lights. Sources differ on when Formosan swarms start, so see the swarm season guide.
What about German cockroaches?
They are small and tan with two dark stripes behind the head. The female carries her egg case until the eggs are nearly ready to hatch. They keep to kitchens and bathrooms and do not fly, despite having wings.
What moves the price
How much does pest control cost here?
This page gives no figure. The price is explained and approved before any work starts. See the pricing page for how quotes are presented.
What changes a quote?
House size and footprint, whether the home sits on a crawl space, pier or slab, and how much of the sub-floor and perimeter can be reached. The species, the scope, whether a CL-100 is needed for a sale, and the number of structures also matter.
I already have a termite bond. Does that change anything?
It can. Read the current contract and ask the holding company which subterranean termites and which damage are covered. The contract may need amending or rewriting, depending on its terms.
Why does a crawl space change the job?
A crawl space has sub-floor framing a technician can inspect, and damp there can feed decay and draw termites. A slab home has no sub-floor to inspect, so the work centers on the perimeter and the landscaping.
Local conditions in North Charleston
Why does humidity matter so much here?
The coast is warm and humid most of the year, with no winter freeze deep enough to stop breeding. Humid air entering a vented crawl space can condense on cold ducts and joists, and sustained damp feeds wood-decay fungi.
What does the county do about mosquitoes?
Charleston County treats larvae in standing water from the air and adults by ground spraying. It chooses where to spray using surveillance and reports from the public. Read the county mosquito guide.
Does my yard matter for mosquitoes?
Yes. The Asian tiger mosquito, the most common daytime biter in the Carolinas, breeds in standing water in gutters, bird baths, flower pots, tires and tarps. Draining those containers matters more than night fogging, which often does not control it.
Why do housing types change the work?
Old raised frame houses downtown have exposed framing and deep porches. Mid-century homes in West Ashley, Hanahan and older North Charleston usually sit on vented crawl spaces, while post-1995 homes in areas like Cane Bay are often slab-on-grade.
